To share with you my half-baked (or completely uncooked) ideas; the badly-recorded, badly-performed works-in-progress. The unfinished work. The stuff I know is just awful. The stuff that nobody else is supposed to hear.@wendydesignshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12496827663647388930noreply@blogger.comBlogger59125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7305789625060282242.post-48686490014291801642018-04-17T10:13:00.002-04:002018-04-17T10:13:42.477-04:00It has been a while, hasn't it? I have been watching "Soundbreaking" on PBS (and Hulu) sporadically and just watched episode 3, about when music became electrified (electric guitars, synths, etc). They brought up Jimi Hendrix, who I adored as a teen and young adult and I realized I haven't listened to any of his music in years. It made me very sad. Actually, every time I watch a documentary that involves George Martin in any way (as documentaries about music all seem to be produced by Sir Martin), I get sad. I get sad because I have squandered so many years not perfecting my craft, not learning the bass, or practicing the piano, or as has been the case for the last 5 years or so, not even singing out loud. Not even in the car. Not anywhere.

I wonder why I've decided to silence myself. I think about how maybe I should have tried harder to form a band or get into a band. I wonder why I think about things and yet I don't do them.

Will this be the year I try again and actually do something? is anyone going to want to see a 60-year-old overweight woman perform? It's not like I have a decades-long career on stage to draw from. I can still count all my gigs on my fingers and toes and still have some digits left.

Under other circumstances, this bit of writing would have been in a notebook and nobody would see it until maybe after I die and another family member decided to see if the notebook was empty or not. And it would possibly give them some insight into my thought processes. But I'm posting this here, for the public to see, should they come upon it. I doubt that will happen. If I had to guess, I'll get some comments from a spam farm telling me how great my blog is and shoes.@wendydesignshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12496827663647388930noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7305789625060282242.post-24289462616160657402014-11-21T07:58:00.002-05:002014-11-21T07:58:23.665-05:00Music for the Goddess is now on iTunes! Now you can get Goddess Mandala and Dancing with Hecate or individual songs directly from the iTunes store.
Woven Roots FestivalI'm going to be playing an actual concert this summer, at the Woven Roots Festival, held at the Brendan T Byrne State Forest in New Lisbon, NJ on June 28th, 2013 8:00 PM.

This is the only live performance I'm doing for the entire year. If you can be in the area and want to come to the show and not stay for the whole weekend, contact me or the festival organizers for a special Friday-evening pass. I will be distributing CDs, shirts and posters at the show and all through the weekend.

If you can't come out to the wilderness of New Jersey, and you still want to see me perform live, I will be making a video of the show, available exclusively for people who are able to support the festival with a minimum donation of $20. The video will be available for download later in July, after the festival.

It would be great if you can promote the event by sharing this post among your friends.
Working on some songs for the gig and re-familiarizing myself with my old equipment.

What I didn't record was me jamming out to a jazz-based rhythm track with a piano track and doing a lot of scat singing that eventually devolved into the word "potato". This might actually become a song. We'll see.

I placed the song in a fantasy setting and called it Wizardwood, and it was a progressive rock/hard rock song, full of screaming guitars and drums and keyboards.

Well I have a gig coming up. A solo gig. As in, I will be playing by myself (hopefully not with myself) for the entire set.

There are some really interesting presets on the VoiceLive Touch, and I was playing around with them last night and took Wizardwood in a completely different direction. It needs some tweaking and adjustment and slightly less cats, but I did all this with just my voice and the VoiceLive Touch, and I'm pleased with the direction this is going in.

And her name lends itself to some nice rhythmic patterns. Like these:

It took me a little while to realize that "Also Panzi" is in 5/4 time, which I really like.
Well last weekend my daughter came home from college for the day and I was showing her our practice set up in the basement and she told me "You need to see a Kimbra video on YouTube" which I did, and I discovered she was using a TC Helicon VoiceLive Touch vocal processor, which does everything that our 2 units do - in one unit - and it does more and easier... So the next day we took our old equipment over to Guitar Center and traded it all in for the VoiceLive (plus a small amount of cash, of course), and the thing showed up here today.

There is a learning curve with this thing, and I realize I need to make a set of presets for my specific needs, but I did these things this evening. I'm not completely happy with the mix as picked up by the iPad's microphone. I'm going to have to come up with a better way to record what I'm doing - finding the power supply for my M-Audio recorder would probably help a whole lot - I can record HOURS of mp3 on the 1GB flash drive in there. But, as I've promised to show you my process, here are the raw things I came up with tonight.

Of course, now you can get the new version that will hold like 3 hours of music, whereas this one only stores 15 minutes, but it's what I have and while I have a kid in school, I'm a gal on a budget, so I won't be upgrading for a while.

It's basically been sitting in the box since I bought it, until last week. It took days to figure out the right settings on the PA to get vocals to register on the thing (and also we discovered the PA needed a little work - all the pots on it were dirty and there was a lot of noise that a little tuner cleaner took care of).

Last night, I started playing with it. However, I haven't worked out a hi-fidelity reliable way to record what I've been doing, and I didn't save anything I built up last night on the pedal, but it's an interesting way to compose a song using only vocals. Here is a poorly-recorded snip of a loop that I recorded last night.

Having this rhythm groove set on repeat and adding layers and sounds on top of it was very hypnotic. Listening to it the next morning, I hear places that certainly need some editing and some bits that I quite like and want to expand into a more complete work. I have no idea where this is going to go yet.

I had the lyrics sitting around ever since my friend Margaret died suddenly from a heart attack in the late 1990's. The music was created after getting back from NYC Pagan Pride day on Sept 23, 2001. It was supposed to be held in Battery Park, but that was still smoldering from the attacks. So the venue was moved to Washington Square Park in the Village. I was one of 2 or 3 other bands playing that day; I don't remember who they were, unfortunately.

What I do remember from going in to the city that day was when I was on the NJ Transit train coming in, after we pulled out of the Newark station, I felt like we were passing through a physical barrier, and I needed to raise my own "shields" to keep waves of emotion from getting to me.

Music for the Goddess was the first act of the day, and I was given permission to sing the Star Spangled Banner to start off the day's activities. There were a lot of Pagans around the park and a lot of passers-by. A huge flag was hanging from the arch in the park. I remember that the crowd stopped to listen to me and the open area in front of the stage was full of people and there was a lot of cheering when I finished the song and I got to shout out "Goddess Bless America!" for the first time, which felt pretty good.

When we were done, Daxe, my bass player, Josh, my friend who lived in lower Manhattan at the time (and who since has moved out of the city to Connecticut), and whose apartment faced the World Trade Center, and I decided to walk down to ground zero to see it and pay our respects.

Walking down there was physically difficult. I think the city put up its own psychic shields around the place. When we got within 10 blocks of ground zero, it felt like I was walking through jello. It became more difficult to move forward with every step. We didn't have cameras or much of anything - we just felt the need to bear witness.

I got home that evening and locked myself in my studio, grabbed a microphone and recorded the melody played by the cello and the vocal line in a wordless cry. It took several years, and the passing of my mother in 2003 before I could revisit this and complete the song.

The freaky thing about the recording is this: I live 5 miles (as the crow flies) from Newark airport (the airport where the hijacked planes originated), right underneath one of their flight paths - some days it's takeoff, some days it's landing. When I was recording the vocal track, I didn't realize that a plane was flying overhead in the middle of the third verse. I didn't realize it until I was doing the mixing. I decided to leave that track as it was and not re-record it. If you listen really carefully with headphones on, you can hear it. That was not on purpose.
